NICOLE FISCHER
EDITOR & WRITING COACH
MY SERVICES
I offer a range of editing, copywriting, coaching, and consultation packages. My prices vary depending on the service and length of your project. In most cases, I charge per word (between $0.02-$0.075), factoring in the level of edit and how many rounds are included. Shorter projects or one-off consultations have a flat fee (between $150-$550) and coaching rates are hourly ($150) with a monthly retainer if you’d like to talk regularly ($250).

I'm happy to share my initial impression of your first chapter or a sample line edit on 300 words upon request. In general, I prefer to have a candid chat (via email or video call) about your needs and my editing style before we agree to collaborate. Many years of experience have taught me that forcing feedback on a very small snippet of the story is not a clear indication of how edits on a full manuscript may turn out!
I currently have a few editing slots left in November and December 2025 (most other services I can fit in asap). My typical turnaround time is ~5 days to 2.5-4 weeks, depending on the project. Occasionally my schedule may allow for a rush project at a higher fee. Please use the contact form below to request more information on services, pricing, and timelines, or to get a recommendation if you’re not yet sure what service you need. I provide an initial quote followed by a standard contract, and I accept payment in installments through Stripe or my Business Venmo.

Generative AI Disclaimer: I personally do not use any AI tools beyond basic spellcheck features included with Word (not Copilot). I will never input your work into any GAI software or chatbot, use GAI to assess your manuscript, nor rely on GAI to write. my own editorial feedback or copy. Please let me know if you have used GAI to write any of your material so we can discuss if/how to move forward.
QUERY REVIEW
When you’re ready to query agents and/or publishers that accept unsolicited manuscripts, I'll review your query letter and/or package (query + synopsis + sample chapters) to ensure your material is clear, concise, and grabs the reader’s attention. I’ll help you structure the email to meet agent/publisher expectations, suggest edits to your descriptive copy, proofread the full text, and offer feedback and suggestions on any comp titles. If you're interested, I can also provide line edits and big-picture comments on your synopsis and sample chapter(s).
PLOT EVALUATION
If you’re working on (or stuck in the middle of) a story idea and would like another set of eyes or a brainstorming partner, I'll read your outline, a detailed synopsis, and/or a few sample chapters, offering my initial impression of the concept and asking questions about story elements. I'll also provide ~2-3 suggestions on how to improve any current issues with plot, logic, pacing, voice, character arcs, or any relevant romantic conflicts, world-building, and mystery elements. I'll make notes in the file(s) and share them with you ahead of a call, where we can discuss ideas, brainstorm changes, and address any outstanding questions. Note: This is better for folks who do not have a finished draft.
COPY WRITING
I'll read a detailed synopsis of your novel and write a draft of descriptive copy you can use on the book jacket or back cover, online retailers, and any other places you need to share it. Depending on your print format and genre, cover copy is typically between 150-350 words, including an SEO-optimized intro line. I’ll write the copy based on the tone of your novel and genre expectations (e.g., romantic comedy copy would be different from a thriller). If you wish, you can tell me your desired tone and length or send an example of copy you like, and I’ll aim to write it in that style. Once a draft is complete, you can provide feedback, and I’ll do one round of rewrites on the copy. Note: If you've paid for a manuscript assessment or developmental edit with me, you can add this on after revisions for a discount.
MANUSCRIPT ASSESSMENT
I'll read your current manuscript draft to evaluate the voice, plot, logic, structure, pacing, conflict(s), and character development. Depending on the subgenre, I'll also keep track of the romantic tension and emotional arcs, mystery elements and reveal payoff, and world-building. I'll share a multi-page editorial letter highlighting key areas that could be improved (and things I liked, of course!) as well as suggestions on how to fix or strengthen those elements. Once you've had time to read my letter, you can request a call to ask me questions and discuss your revision ideas. Note: This is less in-depth and more big-picture than a full dev edit and does not include notes in the manuscript itself.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT (+/- LINE EDIT)
A more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of your completed manuscript with in-line notes and optional track change edits for readability. I'll evaluate the voice, plot, logic, pacing, structure, conflict(s), and character development, as well as any relevant romantic tension, emotional arcs, mystery elements, or world-building. I’ll share an editorial letter outlining any areas that could be improved (and things I liked, of course!), and I’ll offer suggestions on how to fix or strengthen those elements. I’ll also add comments in the manuscript where and when story problems or questions arise. It's not unusual for my letters to be 10+ pages single spaced with 300+ comments in the file. But I aim to be as constructive and gentle as possible to help you create the best possible version of the story you want to tell. Once you’ve had time to read my letter and in-line notes, you can request a call to ask me questions and discuss your revision ideas. I will also do a second cold read of your clean, revised manuscript once you’ve finished editing. If you'd like line edits (what amounts to a language polish), they can be added a la carte or in place of the cold read after you've revised. I'll make track change suggestions and trims to minimize repetition and inconsistencies; improve readability (e.g., awkward or clunky phrases, confusing language, jarring transitions, wordiness, or unnecessary details); and fix any minor punctuation or grammar errors I spot.
INDUSTRY CONSULTATION
Wondering which imprints acquire your genre? Not sure how to narrow down your list of agents? Curious why or how certain titles get into Target or selected for the BOTM box? On an hour-long call, we can discuss the overall publishing industry, the query and submission process for both agents and editors, what may happen if you get an offer (or multiple), the key milestones between signing a contract and publication day (i.e., what is happening behind the scenes while you finish your manuscript), and an overview of what to expect after publication (let’s be realistic!). With over a decade of experience on both the literary agency and publisher side, I have a wealth of insider knowledge to share. You can pick my brain for intel and tips on various publishing situations.
WRITING OR BOOK COACHING
This is a customizable offering for those looking for a coach to be a sounding board and skill-building partner (for business communications or publishing). I'd be available on a regular basis to offer tips and strategies, coach you through projects, and provide input on your writing itself. For authors, this is modeled after what you'd get with an in-house editor at a big 5. I'd provide industry guidance and input on your working drafts, the marketability of your ideas, your author brand (voice, covers, descriptive copy, project themes and tropes, website design, etc.), or any other publishing-related topics you're curious about. I'll read and give feedback on your in-progress material, brainstorm with you, help you set word count goals, and more. For other professionals, I'd review your business communications and writing projects, working with you to identify strengths, areas of development, and actionable goals to improve your communication skills. I'd share business writing best practices, pen-to-paper strategies, and tips to improve clarity, concision, and structure, which you could apply to emails, pitches, proposals, reports, etc. If you’re interested in an ongoing editor or coach relationship, please feel free to reach out for a consultation to discuss your needs, how long you'd like to work together, and frequency of meetings. I have various session packages that can be customized to fit each client's needs.
